The Fifth Wall

Often times people forget about the fifth wall in a room, the ceiling! Your ceiling is a great place to add more interest to a space and when it comes to great design, it’s all about leading your eye around the room so it’s a good idea not to forget about the ceiling.

Here are a few ways you can incorporate different design elements on your ceiling in order to add more character to this fifth wall.

Paint! (Envelope the ceiling):

One of the easiest, yet most impactful ways to add a punch is paint! Making your ceiling the pop of colour in a space can add a fun element to a room. You can also try bringing your ceiling colour down a foot or 2 to “envelope” the space, adding a bit of graphic interest.

Tongue and Groove or Wood Panels:

Try adding tongue and groove to your ceiling. If you’re not feeling particularly crazy about adding too much of an accent to your ceiling, tongue and groove is a great way to add a textural element while keeping it simple and clean. While wood on the ceiling is usually tied to that cottage or farmhouse style, this can actually be a very transitional design element when used correctly.

Coffered squares also add a grand feel with a historical flare. This brings in architectural details from the past and is a great addition to any home, old or new.

Wallpaper:

Yes, wallpaper your ceiling! This is an unexpected and exciting way to add character to any room and what better way to lead your eye upwards than to add this element of interest to your ceiling! You can add texture or a fun graphic to make an impact. Powder rooms are a small area and a great place to exercise a pattern, where as bedrooms you may opt for something more serene, like a grasscloth.

Concrete:

Looking for that industrial, lofty feeling? Try exposed concrete. This architectural detail gives a room that immediate industrial feeling and is a great addition to modern design when wanting to add a cool texture to the space.

Bold Lighting:

Still not sold on actually adding much of a design element to your ceiling? Start with your lighting! Adding bold lighting is another simple way to draw your eye up while adding a bit of character to the ceiling of your space.
